Syed Zafar, President
Syed has been pursuing his passion of promoting intercultural understanding for 12 years through keynote addresses, seminars & workshops. He has presented over 300 programs on cross-cultural awareness at corporations, universities and not-for-profit organizations in USA, Canada, Norway, Brazil and UAE. He has been conducting cross-cultural awareness programs for ExxonMobil for over 10 years.

Syed Zafar was born and raised in Pakistan. Before coming to the U.S. in 1982, he worked in Saudi Arabia for four years. Syed has an MBA from University of St. Thomas and B.S. in Computer Science from University of North Texas.

Joanne Dodd, Program Chair

I recently retired as a teacher of high school world geography and history at Scarborough High School. I have a B.A. in History from U. of Arizona, a M.Ed. in Social Studies Curriculum and Instruction from U. of Houston, and a M.A. in Cross-Cultural Studies at U.H. Clear Lake. In June, I completed a NCTA study tour of China and in September, a trip to Spain and Portugal. My hobbies include playing Russian folk music, reading, traveling and learning Spanish. I am a volunteer at the Houston World Affairs Council Outreach program and hope to volunteer at MECA as well.

 
Jan O'Brien, Program Team

Jan O’Brien is President of Jan O’Brien & Associates, Intercultural Consulting and an Associate with Personal Leadership Seminars, LLC (www.PLSeminars.com). She designs and facilitates intercultural communication workshops, intercultural business briefings, and global and domestic team building workshops based on the Personal Leadership framework. She also provides customized intercultural and Personal Leadership coaching services for clients who wish to continue their professional development on a one-to-one or small group basis. Jan has lived, studied and worked extensively overseas, in particular in the UK, France, Singapore, Thailand and the S.E. Asia region and has worked with clients from many language and cultural backgrounds. She is a Past President of SIETAR Houston, a board member of SIETAR USA, and is Chair for the SIETAR USA 2006 conference.

 

 
Daniel Watanabe, Program Team

I am a part-time instructor in microbiology at the Houston Community College, but also work as a U.S.-Japan Relations Consultant under my company W Resources. Have done Japanese language interpreter/translation work as well as cultural briefings to governmental, businesses and private agencies during the past 40 years. B.S. from Penn State University, M.A. from U.C. at Berkeley, and Ph.D. from Upstate Medical Center, SUNY, all in microbiology. Formerly assistant professor at Baylor College of Medicine. Twice president for the Japan America Society of Houston, and for the Japanese American Citizens League, Houston Chapter. Served in the U.S. Army military intelligence during the occupation of Japan and the Korean War. Living in Houston since 1980.

Hugh performs systems audits in several engineering and manufacturing industries worldwide as a contractor to various quality systems registrars. He is very interested in language and cross-cultural studies. He also performs individual management systems consulting for various companies.

Wayne Dorris, Treasurer

While in the Air Force, Wayne worked as a Psychiatric Social Worker managing Child Advocacy, Alcoholism and Mental Health clinical services. At M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, he established a training program in Psychosocial Aspects of Oncology. Since 1991, he has been doing OD Consulting and Training in energy related companies, providing programs in Singapore, Cairo, the Netherlands and throughout the UK.
